mfReferral: Give your visitors a personal message

mfReferral mfReferral allows you to display a custom message by checking from which referral website the visitor came. This way, you'll have a more interactive & personal site.

By doing this, you can kindly ask your visitors to do something, like give you a digg when they came from Digg.com. Ask them if they found what they were looking for, if they came from Google.

Do you want to get your users to do something or just give them a personal message? mfReferral is your solution!

Features

A couple of features of this module are:

  1. Standard support for over 25 websites, including Digg, StumbleUpon, Reddit, del.icio.us and much more.
  2. Add up to 5 custom websites
  3. Creates a CSS valid message
  4. Message doesn't appear to users browsing your website or visiting your site through a direct link
  5. Message box is very flexible and highly customizable
  6. Ability to show buttons (Such as the Digg button)
  7. Set your own custom text for each website

Install on Joomla! 1.5

  1. Log in to your back-end of the site
  2. Go to "Extensions", "Install/Uninstall"
  3. Click on "Browse" and navigate to the downloaded ZIP archive
  4. Press "Upload File & Install"
  5. Go to "Extensions", "Module Manager"
  6. Search for mfReferral and edit it

Tips & testing

The module works best when placed in a module position directly above your content. This way, your users will see the message before they read the actual article. Also, remove the module name in the module details to give it a better look.

If you want to test the module, simply install RefControl. This Firefox extension allows you to set your own refferal ID.

If you enter custom websites, only enter the domain. Don't add the http:// prefix, or the subdomain. Also, keep in mind that the base URL of the images always is the directory where mfReferral is installed.

Gravatar image Wow! This is one of the best plugins for Joomla that I have found. Thanks a lot! A note: del.icio.us is now using delicious.com

john - Can't switch off new referrer   2009-03-25 15:46:45
Gravatar image Hi, looks great but I'm using the joomla 1.5 version and the message just seems to give the new referrer message regardless of the referrer and even if I set new referrers to 'no' in parameters. Anyone else got this problem, any ideas?

Cheers
James - I use 1.5 and it works well.   2009-03-25 16:03:14
Gravatar image John,

I am using 1.5 on EnsignTech.com- and the plugin seems to work fine. There is a plugin you can use for Firefox to test the different referrers, but I don't know what the problem might be.

Gravatar image Thanks james, yeah I've got the ref control plugin and I've tried going through serps results and off referring links as well. The problem seems to be the new referrer parameter is 'stuck on' (technical term!) might have a hack around the code and see if I can delete if if noone has any suggestions
Maverick - Love that .   2009-04-06 10:27:19

stadmin - Worked Great   2009-06-17 03:20:10
Gravatar image Module worked great, just a few tweaks to get it like I want it, and I had it up on the site...very glad I found this!
joof - can it do more?   2009-08-17 18:14:20
Gravatar image Since the module can detect where the visitor came from, is there any way I can use its intelligence to direct the visitor to a specific web page based on where they came from?
In other words, if they came from www.companya.com, I'd like the first page they come to on my site to be www.mysite.com/companya/
simon - Would love such a module   2009-11-19 12:41:28
Gravatar image @stadmin, I would love a module that could either forward the visitor to a certain page or display certain content on the page they are landing on.

That way I could forward a visitor to our campain page if they clicked a banner and still the url in the banner could be www.mysite.com

Or I could display certain content on my frontpage is they where forwarded from a third party site.

Gravatar image Is there anyway to make a custom referral so if you click a internal link( from my site to my site i.e. go from one page to another) and just post a custom message like happy holidays. tried entering domain and leave blank and ip address no luck
