12 reasons why I hit the "Show next page" button directly

Social bookmarking websites are great. They help you spread the word of your blog, website or article and you can discover new ones. Personally, I like StumbleUpon the best. I like to stumble over the net, giving away many "Thumb up".

However, there are always websites that I come across when stumbling, that I just have to give a "thumbs down", or just directly navigate away from. Why? I have 12 reasons why I hit the "Show next page" button directly.

Show next page

Leaving out the 404 error pages and servers being down, here are the reasons I press the "Show next page" button in random order. Remember these tips and don't make these mistakes on your own website. These tips are not only for users from StumbleUpon, but for all websites.

  • Your website has an ugly lay-out

I'm pleased that there aren't many websites on the net that are ugly these days. But still, some websites on the internet manage to hurt my eyes. Thumbs down and you'll never ever see me again.

  • Stupid Flash animations

Flash animations can be really cool. Many games that I come across on StumbleUpon are innovative and fun to play. Too bad I also see terrible Flash animations that keep on looping with awful music. Seriously, stop making those.

  • Overkill of advertisements

Pop-ups, 90% ads and 10% content, or one of the top 5 worst forms of online advertisement are things that I really hate. Be loyal to your readers and visitors, give them quality content and not stupid ads.

  • Lame URL changes

There are websites like Just Got Owned where you can change the URL to something different and manage to change the content. Change the URL to something like index.php?q=stumle_upon_is_the_shit and you'll get massive traffic to your "discovery". Please people, stop doing this.

  • Promoting a referral ID

Stumbling a referral ID like BlogRush or hiding it under an URL shortening service is absolutely lame. People are not stupid, they'll not register to help you with your request. These pages will be a direct "Thumbs Down", a negative comments and I'm out.

  • Using an IFRAME on the top of the page

Websites with advertisements showing another website with in an IFRAME. I'd rather "Thumbs up" the actual website than giving the website with the "top frame" one. That's stealing content from other websites. Also, Stumbling Google Images is the same: Just stumble the page instead of the Google Image.

  • Stumbling good services

I know that services such as Google, Gmail and Hotmail are great. You don't have to stumble them, I know them. Everybody knows them. Especially stumbling mailing services are stupid: I have an automatic login for Gmail, so I would go directly to my inbox. Not stumble-worthy.

  • Automatic page-redirect

You go to a Stumbled page, but when it is finished loading, you'll automatically get redirected to another page. What was the use of Stumbling the original page if you'll get redirected to another page? Because of the new page, I hit the "Show next page" button directly.

  • Same content over and over

How many times haven't you seen the cool looking business cards or all the funny demotivational posters already. All in the same order, so just a copy of the original. After five times seeing these pages, it just isn't funny anymore.

  • Automatic starting music on the background

"Show next page". Page loading. *BAM*, there go my speakers. While listening to my own music, on the background of the site there is some tune playing. This is an absolute "no no", so there I "go go" to the next page.

  • Telling me to buy something

Just like the referral ID. You're trying to promote your article where you want to sell something. C'mon people, stop doing this. I'm not going to buy anything from you, I just want to have a good time Stumbling over the net. Thumbs down, negative review and you'll never see me again.

  • The article is way too hard to read

I don't like long pillar articles, but some have such an interesting title that I'm willing to read them if they're easy to read. Don't make one huge block of text, that's boring. Check out the 16 tips you must check before publishing an article and maybe I'll stick on your article. Otherwise, I'm out. Together with a huge amount of the StumbleUpon community.

Feel free to share your comments on why you would navigate away from the stumbled page.

Gravatar image I hit "Show Next Page" if a page doesn't interest me immediately. However, I never use the thumbs-down button, mainly because it is unclear what "thumbs down" actually does.

It seems that many people use thumbs-down if they don't like the content of a site. Makes sense, right? Not really - because what you're saying is "don't show me this kid of site again". And that might not be what you want to happen.

For example, I don't like SUV's. When I stumble upon an automotive page showing a big ugly SUV, I'm tempted to give it a thumbs-down, so that I see less SUV stumbles. The problem is that Stumble-Upon will simply send me less automotive related pages - and I don't want that to happen. As much as I hate certain kinds of cars, I can't assume Stumble-Upon is sophisticated enough to know that I thumbs-downed a page due to my not liking the particular body style of the car on that page.

Likewise with comedy pages - even if I don't think it's funny, I never thumbs-down, because Stumble-Upon can't possibly differentiate between my sense of humor, and the senses of humor employed on every comedy related page in the SU database.

The only reason to thumbs-down is if you specifically do not want to see anything related to that page any more. If you stumble on a comic strip that you find offensive, only thumbs-down if you don't want to see any comic strips anymore. In which case... why do you have that sort of interest checked off in your preferences?

Gravatar image the thumbs down button means you do not wish to view any more pages concerning or similiar to the page u just thumbed down... :)

Gravatar image :) I would have listed the EXACT same reasons as you....They are without a doubt the top reasons any seasoned surfer would list!

Gravatar image Dude ... put the pipe down.

I don't know where you got that ego from, but it's misplaced if you somehow think that all blogs should be written to suit you. Mine is not. You are welcome to visit it and give it a thumbs down twice a day if you like ... because you are not my target audience, nor are those who might follow your lead. Have them stop by, too. All that will do is pare the mis-directed traffic off my site ... it won't hurt me in my target audience.

There goes your 'influence'.

I am not shooting to be easy to read ... I am trying to be -worth- reading. That is sufficient challenge in its own right. That is why I do not write in the 'sound-bite' style.

How is it that you are declaring 'usabilty' standards but you provide a text box with blue lettering against a blue background? You just completely wiped out anyone with low vision or, quite possibly, color blindness.

And your article was about what? Making a blog readable?

OTOH, thanks for the link to the demotivational posters. There were some that were new to me and I liked having them grouped, too.
Marco - You got it wrong   2008-03-05 09:29:51
Gravatar image Hi,

I think you misunderstood this article. Stumbling is know to be "fast" (Which is actually a downside of blogs). The Stumblecommunity is different from any other target audience. Many of my articles aren't "Stumble-worthy" too.

I was just giving tips if you fully want to aim your blog to the SU community, not to your own readers.

You shouldn't take it all personal, I'm pretty sure your target audience does love your blog :) .
brad - Your ego!   2008-12-04 12:42:23
Gravatar image Sounds like you're the one with the ego. This guy wrote his own opinions on his own blog and you took it personally. Who the fuck cares if your blog doesn't match up with this guy's opinion. Stop being so self obsessed
LOL   2008-08-30 06:24:39
Gravatar image I love how you make negative comments on your blog hard to read.

Oh and your font is too small, too many ads on the right.

This site gets my thumbs down

This page is almost an exact duplicate of page stumbleupon produced last week. Is this blogger stumbling for ideas, then submitting near duplicates on his own site to stumbleupon? :s

#14

The title of the page is in the theme of "the ten best/worst/badass" Talk about a blog with no thought behind. I know. I'll do an article about weird clocks! google pics "weird clocks" first 10 hits are "10 most weird clocks" brilliant! ad monies come to me!

#15

any joke or cartoon who's primary punch line is f--k. and there seem to be hundreds of them.

#16

for that matter, punchlines of FAIL, PWND, Priceless, LOL, or ROFL. LOL: yeah it works in chat. But as a punchline? A rabbi, a priest, and a minister walk into a bar. The bartender looks up and says LOL.

#17

Ending the blog pleading for attention from the reader. "Well, what do you think? post your comments below!" Or even worse is "Vote for me/this blog/this video!" It sounds like "Is anybody reading this? Please talk to me! I'm so lonely!" :(

A well written article with a comment section is invitation enough. What, is the reader going to think "this author has made some interesting points, and I want to share my views. Oh, hey -- a comment section! I wonder if I could share my thoughts? hmm. no invitation from the author. I will just leave my banana bread recipe then.

Maybe I will start leaving a good banana bread recipe as a comment on bad blog articles!

vv   2010-01-02 04:06:25
Gravatar image real talk right here.

flash intros become obnoxious after stumbling through them so many times.

and websites that try to be subtle or weird in their design to the point where you don't know wtf it is are annoying.
Josh   2010-01-03 19:38:21
Gravatar image Although I do agree with a lot of these, you're just making yourself look like an asshole with the others.

"Just SRSLY STOP MAKING THESE HEHEHE LOOK AT MY AUTHORITY"

A lot of the things you've been mindlessly flaming are actually pretty good.

Gravatar image I hate it when sites I StumbleUpon resize the window. I'm gone if that happens.

I also don't like to wait for videos to load, and I hate when they start automatically. I don't watch too many videos that I Stumble on.
Ryan   2011-01-23 04:18:53
Gravatar image I agree the one thing I hate is flash with looping music, flash, yes but one time through is enough, and please no music.
