20 breathtaking realistic CG portraits by CGSociety

I absolutely love computer graphic (CG) 3d art. Some renders look absolutely stunning and almost don't have distinction with reality. One of my previous articles showed some superb badass 3d fictional characters from CGTalk.

CGTalk is the forum from CGSociety. This is a great place where great CG artists like to show their work. This article rounds up 20 breathtaking realistic CG portraits by CGSociety.

Realistic CG portraits

Be prepared to see some amazing CG work. If you didn't know these were all created with a computer, would you think it was real? Don't forget to visit the CGCociety, a very inspirational place (Both for 2d and 3d).

Hope you liked it and give your some inspiration for your next design work. If you know any other realistic computer graphic portraits, feel free to share it with the rest. Here is another one that is truely amazing called Weird Science, but kinda NSFW, which is the reason I didn't include it in the above list.

Gravatar image Wow, they're amazing! <img src=hock:' />

A few of those look like they're actually photos! I wish I was talented enough to do things like that!

BTW, I love your blog design... very artistic :D
Marco - Thanks!   2009-06-09 16:49:21
Gravatar image Thanks Simon, glad you liked it! Some of them indeed really look like pictures and are almost real, even in the smallest details.

Haha - haven't you seen my blog design before ;) ?

Marco - Agreed   2009-06-09 20:39:07
Gravatar image Have to agree with you there - At first, I also was like "Whoah?!". But then, I viewed all the comments on CGTalk that really showed some appreciation for that piece, it's truly one piece of art.

Still hope you enjoyed this article ;) !
Anonymous   2009-06-10 03:44:36
Gravatar image They're really good CG, but I wouldn't go so far as to call them "breathtaking[ly] realistic"...
Miya   2009-06-12 02:51:26
Gravatar image I'd like to see you do better, hun.

I think they're all amazing works of art and are, in fact, "breathtakingly realistic."
Larry   2009-06-18 04:32:48
Gravatar image So we're not allowed to have a negative opinion about it unless we can do better?

That really makes sense.
Zippy   2009-12-30 03:14:35
Gravatar image This was quite rude, I happen to agree with the anonymous commentor.
Andreas - Wow   2009-06-10 08:49:16
Gravatar image Reeaaally amazing pieces, and sometimes you only believe the ones that are a little bit fake are real cg, the others not...

and btw, I really love your webdesign too!
Jonathan   2009-06-10 20:27:41
Gravatar image Some of these really are amazing, this sort of thing has come a long way in a relatively short amount of time; others still look a little like waxwork dummies, though I'm sure this is just down to the rendering.
Anonymous   2009-06-10 23:53:58
Gravatar image photoshopped...
Sir Had A Ham   2009-06-11 03:52:39
Gravatar image Isn't that kinda the point?
Richard   2009-06-13 21:49:51
Gravatar image Expected:

There is always a smart ass with the comment "photoshopped"...

Excellent work indeed, I imagine tons of hours behind these artworks?
Zippy   2009-12-30 03:15:16
Gravatar image Did you even read anything on this article? Win for idiocy.
audrey - They're real   2009-06-11 00:30:04
Gravatar image The pictures are real, 'no? They were just computer enhanced. But I have to say CGSociety has very artistic people. Good choices for pictures.
Marco - They're fake   2009-06-11 09:51:03
Gravatar image No, they're fake - not pictures at all. Most of them are created using 3d software like 3dStudioMax or Maya and gave them the final touch with Photoshop or similar products.

Check out the 3d renders from John Locke and Bernadette. They both have amazing detail and combined with some very sleek textures, you can achieve something that looks like a picture, but isn't ;) .

Gravatar image OMFG! These pics are really awesome. Probably, a result of extreme hard works. I love the ones who developed these pics. Great!

Gravatar image Shopped!!!!! I could tell, the pixels are all wrong, every single one was shopped!!!!!!!! I know these things ok, I'm a graphic designer for Adobe!!!!!!11

I'm sorry, someone was gonna say it sonner or later, and now that I did, we wont have a runny-nosed-nine-year-old saying it...
Knows Idiots - Why bother...   2009-06-13 21:10:42
Gravatar image ..to post like a bleeding moron with ingenious comments like this. Of course it's photoshopped - that's the freakin' point.

P.s. If you work for adobe it's probably in their shipping department.

Great work btw.
Chad - That was the lawl   2009-06-20 00:51:13
Gravatar image yeah, I think he was being funny. Get the lawl? He said it as a joke so a kid didn't mean it...

Murtaza. Soni - They look CG, Nonetheless its great work   2009-06-12 15:36:18
Gravatar image Emotions, wrinkles on the face and hands, smiles, frowns, happiness, sadness, anger, love ... These are human traits and very tough to artificially produce. These pics are a great effort at depicting such human traits.

Life can be like "A flawless Potrait."
MIKE B - not all cg   2009-06-12 19:38:08
Gravatar image I am sorry but these pictures are all not totally computer created. they must be coming from a scanned picture and then enhanced or photoshopped. i do not believe that they are 100% drawn 'from scratch' using only a computer!!
Pedro   2009-06-13 00:09:49
Gravatar image Oh must they? Maybe you should click some of the images and see the work in progress threads.
Marco - Haha   2009-06-13 08:51:11
Gravatar image Haha, thanks for that backup Pedro ;) . Seems like not all people really believe that this can actually be created using (3d modeling) software :) .
Kronos - haha   2009-06-12 23:44:42

Bruno - amazing   2009-06-14 04:10:01
Gravatar image Kind of lost at words on how to describe this. These portraits look so real. If you didn't say CG to begin with, I would never ever think it was done with CG.
Peter   2009-06-14 05:15:10
Gravatar image FAKE. ALL. TOTALLY FAKE. They're all regular pictures.
Camille - That Girl   2009-06-14 14:33:39
Gravatar image I don't like the age of that one model with the black tights.
She can't be older than 12.
Janette - HELLO ...   2009-06-19 13:31:48
Gravatar image ... SHE'S NOT A HUMAN ... SHE'S A RENDERING ... SHE HAS NO AGE. What is the matter with everyone :!: :!: :!: :?: :!: Is the possibility someone could actually be talented enough to create these images with a computer that inconceivable. I draw. Not with a computer, just my hands. I can make a drawing look like a photograph, so I don't doubt there is someone out there that can accomplish the same using a computer. Jeez. Open your minds to potential and talent. :pinch: I am spellbound by the talent of these designers. I can barely get the mouse where I want it ... these are mind-boggling.
WOAH - AMAZING   2009-06-14 15:24:06

Gravatar image Dang...that is some serious art work.
Nora Reed - Blogger   2009-06-16 18:25:05
Gravatar image These are some nicely altered images. It looks like there was a ton of hard work put into them. They are really beautiful. Its hard to pull off realism on computer images but these do a nice job. If only some of the movies could put as much effort into theirs, although they are getting better too.
Jane   2009-06-17 06:45:46

Gravatar image I'm no great understander of computo art but didn't these start from a digital image? Like from my camera? Because I can do much the same easily with Corel Painter. In fact some people I've sent them to printed and framed them. But it sure wasn't hard for me. Again, I am not trying to tear anything down, but how was it done? Like the one looks too much like Morgan Freeman to have been put together pixel by pixel. At least as far as I can understand it. What I guess I'm really asking is are these made from a blank canvas or a digital image?
Tim   2010-02-10 05:15:04
Gravatar image The artists probably used photographic references to make them look right but most of these are 3d images, which means the head and face have to be modeled and scupted in 3d, and then textured, lighting generated, clothing created, hair sculpted, shaders written to make the skin realistic, rendered, and then touched up in Photoshop.

The 2D ones are painted in Photoshop or Painter or something similar, usually from scratch, possibly working from a reference. "Paintover" images in which the artist simply paints over a digital photograph are regarded as cheating and usually treated with ridicule.

Gravatar image Instead of art which imitates life, it is technology which imitates art. I went to school for this and did it professionally for a year. I wish I had a time machine to do something different. These paintings are amazing technical achievements but they could never hang in a museum because they don't stand a chance of meaning anything. They are demonstrations of technology, with limitations in resolution, color, the behavior of rendering engines, Photoshop tools and they probably required much more energy than an oil portrait. Also they were most likely extraordinary exercises in logic, troubleshooting, trial and error, mathematics and science. The 'art' was just kind of expected or hoped for. Nobody created these out of solitary lament, or for one heartbroken, impassioned week, forged a delicate a caricature of some legendary lost love. It is because they are non-human, engineered inventions with no flaws. You could try for a million years to humanize the computer's dead soul of infinity. Computer is a meathook with no empathy. No one fully controls it. Computer can't capture the context, the history, the understatement or the vulnerability.

I find it discouraging that our generation has been subverted into this rabbit-hole of machinery, and have not used their energy to glorify life's great mysteries by hand.
